Introduction: Clinical safety is an essential component in the quality of care, both in clinical practice and in its organization. Pediatric patients are especially susceptible to medication errors, so tools to improve its safety are needed.
Method: The implantation of computerized physician order entry with clinical decision support system (CPOE-CDSS) and electronic medication administering registration (EMAR) the pediatrics service was carried out using a commercial software, connected to the electronic medical history. A multidisciplinary working group formed by pharmacists, pediatricians and nursery staff realized the project. After the database adequacy phase, prior to the start-up, training was made to all professionals involved in the process.
Results: During the adequacy of the database of the computer application the working group selected medicines and information to be included in electronic support. The drugs were classified according to their frequency of use. For the most used, dosage and administration recommendations, and safety information were provided. Prior to the implantation of CPOE-CDSS and EMAR, training was given in parallel to prescribers and nurses.
Conclusions: The implantation of the CPOE-CDS-system improves the quality of the prescription, medical order are complete and perfectly structured. By avoiding the pharmacist and nursing transcription, a more secure and efficient prescription-validation-administration process is achieved. The establishment of a working group with all the professionals involved facilitated the communication and the project development.
